How do I move a database I have developed on my local server (2005) to my client?
have to move the database I created in 2005 Enterprise to 2005 Express on my
client site. Do I just do a back up and burn to a CD and after installing
2005 Express restore the backup? Don't I need the .mdf and the .ldf files
or does the backup procedure in the Studio backup both? I set it to backup
the Database.
Regards,
RobertYou can A) drop the database, copy the mdf and ldf files to CD or
somewhere that you can move them and at the client site attach them or
b) do a backup of the database and restore at the client site. Did you
use any Enterprise features that Express may not support?

fine for him. It's a very small client and small database needs.
Interesting idea about detaching and copy the mdf and ldf to CD. Didn't
think that would work. I'll give that a shot.

copied the ldf and mdf I reattach to the original db. That's how I move

When you take a backup of a database, you do not need mdf or ldf files of
your database. *.BAK files (which is the backup file) contains all that
files.
This is a comman way used to copy databases or as Brett mentioned, you can
attach\detach your database files.
For additional info: Attaching and Detaching a database is the fastest
method to copy or move a database. However, it takes your database offline
and this would not be good for production environments. So, backing up a
database does not cause a problem like this.

How do I link tables to another database?

You can set up a linked server. If the stars align, it's as simple as
sp_addlinkedserver THATSERVER
then you can query the remote tables with four-part notation:
select col1, col2 from THATSERVER.db.dbo.tbl
If you are on SQL 2005, you can use synonyms to make your code cleaner:
CREATE SYNONYM remotebl FOR THATSERVER.db.dbo.tlb
and then go:
select col1, col2 FROM remotetbl
Linked servers are a bit tricky to work with, and one obstacle is to
get authentication to work. I can't say that I have fully understood the
rules, but I have not dug very hard into it. You can use
sp_addlinkedsrvlogin to specify how you are to connect to the remote server.

How do I install SQL Enterprise Manager?
Hi All,
I'm pretty new to SQL anything... I'm wondering if there is a way to install just Enterprise Manager on my local workstation so I can open it up and manage or at least look at all of the SQL db's that are spread out on various servers - all in one place?
1. How can I install just Enterprise Manager (if possible). I ran setup on SQL2000 Personal Addition and it didn't look like it was going to get to a 'custom setup' screen so I cancelled, it looked like it was going to install SQL Server 2000 and all components (maybe this is what I have to do, I don't know).
2. If I install SQL2000 Enterprise Manager, am I able to access and view SQL 6.5 and SQL 7.0 and SQL 2000 databases all together?
Thanks so much.
Chris
You could install EM only with other client tools: the option is presented in the installer.
|||FYI Em does not support SQL 6.5 or SQL 2005, it does support 7 and 2000|||Thanks everyone! I found them.|||Where did you find them?|||Just keep going through the install of SQL server and it will either bring you to a custom option (where you can choose just the utilities) or it will bring you to a page that you can check a radio button to just install the utilities.

How do I identify a command in a job step?
I'm having a job that runs a number of steps. One of them runs the CmdExec
"DTSRun /~Z0x...." which fails. I assume it's a Local Package it runs, but
how do I find out which one it is? I've looked a bit around to see if I can
find a table where I can find the number and then maybe see the name of the
job, but with no luck.
Can any of you help with this?
Regards
SteenWhen the DTSRun command uses /~Z, it means the command to
run the DTS package is encrypted. Run a trace or Profiler
when the job runs. This will allow you to get the package
name or package guid.

I've just tried to run a trace, but I must admit that my knowledge in
running traces might not be good enough, since I can't find any references
in there that indicates which package is being run.
Are there any easy or "obvious" data to look for to find out which package
is being executed?

How do i give SQL administrator full rights to SQL 2005 without OS rights
The DBA at our location is demanding local admin (windows) right's to the box so he can function. A WMI error has occurred and no additional error information is availiable
then when he's in sql server 2005 surface area configuation

Is there any documentation or anythign anyone can tell me that i can do to give this DBA full access to configure and admin the SQL portion of his system without giving him admin rights to the OS?
Please help!!
Thanks for any time anyone has taken to review this thread!!
There's no issue in giving him/her admin rights to the box. In most cases, he'll/she'll need it. Don't confuse local admin on the box with network admin rights.

How do I get my local data in the database on the Internet?

Thank you for any help.Hi,
it depends on how your mechanism is to import the data into the
database. If you use the enterprise Manager and DTS to import, just try
to do the same as on your current server, trying to host your file
somewhere and specify it with the http adress where it is hosted on.
(Don=B4t know if htp is supported in DTS)
Another option would be to copy the file via FTP to your server and
specify the local path for importing the data, wheter using DTS or a
linked server to import the data. There are several options to do this,
but its hard to evaluate one without knowing more details.

One method would be to have a scheduled job that runs a DTS package that
will check for files in a give directory and then load them up. You could use
FTP (possibly through a ASP component) to move your files to the location. If
you schedule you job to run periodically then it could pick up the file
without further intervention or you could start the job off manually (say
through a button on your ASP page). As the location that the file is
deposited is probably on the IIS server and not the database server, you will
need a method that will securely allow your database server to see this

How do I find out whats blocking port 1433?
other software which uses 1433 to access SQL. Remember this is all running
locally on a laptop. Port 1433 is being blocked. I have both the Windows
Firewall and the Mcaffee Firewalls disabled.
How can I find out what is blocking the port?
How do you know it's an issue with a blocked port?
If you are receiving an error, post the exact error number
and all details of the message.

|||Are you sure you have TCP/IP enabled (and configured for port 1433)? Try
enabling Named Pipes and specify that in an alias and try to connect with QA
that way.
You can use the DOS tracert command to check paths from one ip point to
another.

|||I have been trying to solve this problem myself over the last three days
having moved to a new dedicated server with a new host.
Old server was Win2k3 SP1
New server is Win2k3 SP2
I found that the IP Security policy was, by default, set to drop all
packets to 1433\1434.
Add the IP Security Policy snap in to MMC and you'll find it.
This change is in addition to configuring windows firewall.
