How do I move a project between machines?

Hi,

I'm an SQL Server novice.

After developing some websites (VS 2005 VWD), my machine started to crumble. (e.g, SQL Server won't uninstall and lots of other software problems)

So I bought a new machine and set up a clean installation of SQL Server 2005 Standard and Visual Studio 2005 standard.

I copied my old "projects" folder to the new machine but I cannot use it.

1: When I try to import I get a "cannot import external files" error.

2: When I click on a project, it launches VS 2005 and I can edit etc.
However, when I try to run the website in VS 2005, I get the following error.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) an error

Please can someone let me know how I can get my "old" projects running in my new environment?

Thanks

Ken

Has your sql server name or instance changed if so you will have to change your dataset to represent the new server.|||

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the reply.
Yes - I'm using a completely new setup. New server name and new instance name.

But I'm still struggling to get to grips with the management console. I bought several books on SQL Server 2005 and spent lots of time ploughing through the zillions of help files but I have not yet found a "How to" that meets my level of need to understand what I'm doing with SQL Serverr Management Studio.

So, when you say "change the dataset" I don't know what steps to take to do that. If you have a minute, I would very much appreciate some basic guide that shows me how to "change the dataset to represent the new server".

Its hard being a novice!

|||In your visual studios project you should have set up your project to connect to the database this is a dataset. It is a setup for a connection to the database from visual studios. You should look in your project, and should be somewhere in your solution depending on which type you are creating.|||

Hi Ray,

Thanks for your comment.

One of the problems I'm experienceing is that most of the well intended advice is couched in metaphorical terms rather than in "Press this then click that" terms.

Let's use the sample SQL Express personal website starter kit as an example.

Which DB?: In the App_Data folder thare are two .mdf files: ASPNETDB.MDF and Personal.mdf I know that the application needs both of these DB's. If I change the connection string, do I have to do it for both of these DB's ?

Connection String?: I have been floundering about in the help files without finding anything that I have found to be helpful. Where do I find the "connection string" to these DB's? what does a connection string look like? , How do I change it? What effect does it have on the rest of the project? Do I have to do anything else to make the app run under SQL Server Standard?

If I can get answers to these questions it will help me to get moving forward.

Thanks for your help.

How do I know if I have Enterprise or Standard on my machine?

I go to help>About and it just says SQL Server 2005

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Version 9.00.1399.00

You can use osql at the command prompt like this:

osql -S yourServerName -E -q "select CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('edition') AS VARCHAR)

|||

The problem I'm having is that I'm unable to establish and instance of a server so I don't know or have a server name.

This is one of the reasons why I want to know the edition I have. As I understand it, Enterprise edition does not support XP Pro OS, which is what I'm running. If I have enterprise then I figure I might as well give up on trying to get this solved. If I have standard, then I won't give up so easily.

|||If you can get to the SQL Server Configuration Manager, select SQL Server 2005 Services in the left pane, then right click on the SQL Server process and select properties, go to Advanced tab and look at the entry "Stock Keeping Unit Name".|||

I can get to the SQL Configuration Manager, however when I right click on SQL Server 2005 Services "SQL Server process" is not shown.

Also, seems like I don't have SQL Server Browser Service installed. The file sqlbrowser.exe is not in my 90\Shared folder.

Any ideas?

Thanks

An easy way is to go to the registry and look for this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup\Edition

Note: You'll have this key for each component installed, so you'll find them here as well:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\NS\Setup\Edition
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Setup\Edition
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Setup\Edition

Thanks,

Ok got it..

I have standard edition...So that rules out OS incompatibility theory I was under the assumption that I working under.

So back to my main problem.

I'm unable to establish a local server instance on my machine.

I have established remote server instances, but not local..

Any ideas?

Thanks

How do I install sqlcmd.exe in my SQL Server client

I have SQL Server 2000 client installed in my machine and I need to call stored procedures thru sqlcmd utility. When I tried using this utility, I got an error message from command prompt sqlcmd command does not exist.

I have osql utility in my client version, but i need to have sqlcmd utility.

Please advice how do I install sqlcmd.exe in my SQL Server client?SQLCMD was introduced in SQL Server 2005. For SQL Server 200, you can either use the OSQL.exe or the ISQL.exe tool.

How do I import a db into MSDE2000?

How do I import a db into MSDE2000? Can it be done? I backed a db up from
another server and now I want to import on to this new machine. Not sure how
to go about doing that though...
Thanks.

Use, e.g. in OSQL,
RESTORE HEADERONLY FROM DISK = 'backup-file-name-and-path'
to get a listing of the contents of the backup file to determine the
logical database name.
Then, if it is for a single mdf/ldf file pair,
RESTORE DATABASE [NewDatabaseName]
FROM DISK='backup-file-name-and-path'
WITH MOVE 'logical-database-name' TO 'NewDatabaseFilename',
MOVE 'logical-database-name_log' TO 'NewDatabaseLogFilename'
The NewDatabaseFilename should have a .mdf extension and the
NewDatabaseLogFilename a .ldf extension.
See RESTORE in BOL for further details.

How do I get my Data into SqlServer?

I have a development machine that I have prototyped with access. I don't know how to get the access data into Sql Server on the Internet. Can you help me? I'm not sure where to start. Thank you for any help.

I am not sure what you are asking? Are you trying to build a web application which will interact with your SQL Server, adding data to a table? Or are you trying to import records from Access into SQL Server? or, something else altogether?|||

I have my web application already. I have everything working. The data is in Microsoft Access on my development machine. I need it in SQL Server on the Internet. I just need to know how to get the data in the table rows to SQL Server. The web application will then be adjusted so that it points to the Internet where data is housed (and where my web pages are).

Thanks for help.

OK then, so you need to do a one-time import of your data from Microsoft Access into your SQL Server.

Which version of Access are you using? And which version of SQL Server?

As far as I know, there are 2 different ways to go about this. You can use the Upsizing Wizard within Access to push the data into SQL Server. Or you can use Data Transformation Services (DTS) within SQL Server to pull your data from Access.|||Thanks. I will look into it. I just so used to an Intranet and having access to all the pieces. I just have access 97. sql server on the Internet is 2000.|||I found that if I right-clicked on my table and exported it, I could export it to an ODBC data source.

How do i discover SQL server is running ...

Hello ,
I'm trying to create an application, which would say if sql server is
running on a machine.
Hope i can get this from windows registry. Is there any other way do
achieve this programatically through windows SDK , or checking the
services programatically ?
If i need to check the registry what are the fields that i should look
at ?
thanks in advance,
VeluChecking the registry would only tell you that SQL Server has been
installed -it wouldn't tell you IF it is running, or incompletely removed,
etc.
Asking SQL directly would require that you knew the SQL Server
name -normally the same as the host, but not necessarily.
Checking the services for 'Started' (or not) could work.

So what is the best way to do it ?
thanks,
Velu|||Velu,
Not sure if this is what you are after, but you could just create a very
quick .NET application that trys to open a connection to an IP (or hostname)
address on the usual SQL Server port, and display a message box if it did, o
r
didn't connect?
Is all you are after, is, a way to find out if a server is running on a
system or not?
